1. Introduction
Lukenya Academy celebrated Mazingira Day on Saturday, 10 October 2026, through a tree-planting activity that brought together students, teachers, staff, and partner organizations in a shared commitment to environmental conservation and climate action.
The event ran from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and was organized through the collaboration of Skyrokers Training & Consultancy Ltd, Lukenya Academy, Global Scholars Connect, Omnisource Ventures, Dream Crest Limited and Cygnus Safety Consulting. The Kenya Forest Service generously donated all the seedlings planted during the event.
2. Planting Trees, Growing Responsibility
The morning began with a word of prayer led by Lukenya Academy students. With the seedlings already delivered to the school grounds, participants enthusiastically joined the planting exercise.
Students, teachers, non-teaching staff, and representatives of the partner organizations worked together to plant over 300 trees. The activity provided a practical opportunity for learners to appreciate the importance of trees in protecting the environment and addressing climate change.
Beyond planting, the participants were reminded that the true success of a tree-planting initiative depends on caring for the seedlings until they mature.
3. Inspiring Young Environment Champions
Dr. Elizabeth Ngumbi of Skyrokers Training & Consultancy Ltd was the Guest of Honour, supported by Mr. Alfred Ngayai of Lukenya Academy and Wendy Kajuju of Global Scholars.
In her remarks before, during, and after the planting exercise, Dr. Elizabeth challenged students to become Young Environment Champions by growing and protecting trees at school, at home, and wherever they may find themselves in the future.
She encouraged every student to adopt a tree, water it weekly, and work with friends to ensure that no seedling dries up through neglect. Students were also introduced to the use of old recyclable plastic bottles for drip irrigation as a simple, affordable way to conserve water and keep young trees alive.
An Inspiring Lesson from Professor Wangari Maathai
To make the day memorable, Dr. Elizabeth shared the inspiring story of Professor Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan environmentalist who demonstrated that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things through determination and teamwork.
Concerned about forest destruction and its effects on communities, Wangari Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977, encouraging women and communities to plant trees and restore the environment. Despite facing challenges and opposition, she persevered. In 2004, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace.
Her journey showed that environmental conservation does not require wealth, fame, or special qualifications. It begins with recognizing a problem and taking action. Her legacy also teaches us that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that requires teamwork and commitment.
The lesson for the young champions at Lukenya Academy was simple: planting a tree is only the beginning; helping it survive is the real achievement.
Dr. Elizabeth encouraged the students to follow Wangari Maathai's example by adopting their own trees, watering them regularly, protecting them from damage, and helping one another with tree care. Through these small but consistent actions, the students can contribute to a greener school and a healthier planet.
4. Exploring Global Education Opportunities
The event also opened a window to international learning opportunities. Representatives of Global Scholars Connect engaged the students in a session on studying abroad, highlighting destinations such as Scotland, the wider United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia, among others. The session broadened the learners' horizons, encouraging them to explore educational opportunities while recognizing their potential to become future leaders and changemakers.
5. Partnerships for Lasting Impact
The event demonstrated the value of collaboration between educational institutions, businesses, environmental organizations, and community partners. The Kenya Forest Service's donation of seedlings was central to the activity, while the combined efforts of all participating organizations made the day both educational and practical. The involvement of the wider school community reinforced the importance of making environmental conservation a continuous practice rather than a one-day event. The involvement of youth is a sustainable method of making sure tree planting activities will not stop with the older generation.
6. Conclusion and Way Forward
Mazingira Day at Lukenya Academy was a meaningful celebration of environmental action, teamwork, and youth leadership. Planting over 200 trees was an important milestone, but their long-term survival will depend on consistent care and collective responsibility.
The school is encouraged to sustain the momentum through regular tree-care activities, student-led environmental initiatives, and monitoring of seedling survival.
As Professor Wangari Maathai's legacy reminds us, meaningful change begins when people take action together.
The call to every Young Environment Champion is clear: Adopt a tree. Water it. Protect it. Help it grow.
Together, we can nurture greener schools, healthier communities, and a more sustainable future.
